I was fifteen when I sent the love of my life to prison for a crime he didn’t commit.
Rafe Mason.
Rising MMA star.
My brother’s best friend.
The guy I destroyed with a single lie.
Now eight years have passed, and Rafe is free. And he only wants one thing.
Me, at his mercy.
And I am. I’m a prisoner on his island, held captive by his deviant desires, bound by his justified fury. Even worse, I’m a hostage of my own treacherous heart.
But Rafe is a man obsessed.
A man whose darkness is bigger than the both of us.
A man who will stop at nothing to get the answers he deserves.
Even if it means breaking me.

We accept the qualities of fiction so that we can forget reality all the while clinging to some distorted version of life. There is no problem with the requirements that have to be met in order to read fiction. This is a testament to the fact fiction doesn’t have to be realistic. It has to be believable. And there is a gaping difference that this story never manages to fill in.With this story, the problem lies in the glorification of brutality for no real reason. The excuses are poor while the psychological explanation is completely non-existent. A seemingly complex while really foolish misunderstanding does not justify the actions set forth by these characters. The effort to convince me was just lacking in every possible way. There is nothing glamorous, glorious, or sexual about this entire experience. It is a series of misdirection, misunderstanding, and a general lack of knowledge about the human condition. I could have accepted even really read the story had it provided a basic foundation to empathize with the characters. I felt nothing but apathy.
This story is masquerading as an exploration of the darker fantasies in life. It does not enlighten, enthuse or persuade me at all to get lost in its story. Instead it leaves me questioning every little detail to the point I didn’t get past the first chapters without hitting the forward button just to see if it was really going to keep going. And it did. Worse, there is a second one.
Some detail this as a story of self-discovery, a twisted one at that. This is far from the case. There is no empowerment. The strife is forced while the characters are extremely weak. This story might have worked with better writing and just a better understand of psychology. It wasn’t about convincing me the story was real enough. The book needed to make it so that I didn’t care. It failed to do that never achieving any sort of relevance at all other then to thoroughly confound me.

Torrent Condemned Series Book 1 edition by Gemma James Jessica Nollkamper Romance eBooks Reviews
Torrent is a dark read, with some events happening that were hard to read. Alex was raped repeatedly by her step brother for many years. She had to have an abortion and her step brother pointed to Rafe, Alex's true love. She was threatened by the step-brother that he would kill Rafe if she didn't go along with him. She did and Rafe got prison.
Rafe gets out of prison and plans his revenge on Alex. Unbeknownst to Rafe, he actually gets Alex out from under Zach, the step brother for a time. Alex feels that she deserves what Rafe does to her, for ruining his life. Needless to say Zach shows up at Rafe's and all hell breaks loose, and leaves one heck of a cliffhanger.
This is only the first part of their journey.
This was written well and I was able to connect to Alex and Rafe.
Take a chance, but if you have triggers regarding abuse and rape, be careful.
In my mind, this book was exactly what I expected it to be, and then some. It is dark, violent, seductive, steamy, and incredibly compelling. My dark side loved this book, even with the strange twists and turns. I would probably not recommend this book to everyone, but if you have a penchant, and understanding for, sadism and masochism, and want something that is both incredibly erotic and dark, this is the series you want to read. It may shock you, surprise you, turn you on.
I bought all the books in this series at one time, and I'm glad I did. I have been able to move from the first to the fourth seamlessly. My kudos goes to Gemma James for keeping her eye on the ball and writing characters that remained true to themselves throughout the books. Rafe is sexy, Zach is a sick mother, and Alex...well, my heart went out to her in more than one place in this book. I felt lots of emotions about her through the book but understood her through it all.
Since I wrote this review, I have gone back and re-read this series. I would first recommend that you read all of the books in the series, not just one. Each book tells the story of a different time in the lives of Rafe and Alex. Make no mistake about this, this book is raw emotions, and some you may not even understand. This book is raw in both its violence and the erotic nature of the relationship between Rafe and Alex. This is a book that starts out as revenge. Revenge for a lie once told. If you are expecting it to be another Patterson thriller, and that's what you normally read, this book isn't for you. If you normally read the near-porn of some billionaire romance (well, pseudo-romances), then this isn't like that either. If you are looking for something different, I recommend you try this series.
If it was possible to rate lower then 1 star I would have, this was horrible with no redeming qualities. Rafe was a UFC fighter who went to jail for rape of Alex, now he is out after 8 years and want revenge. Alex has a terrible life; she is continuously raped by her step brother, feels guilty for sending Rafe to jail for a crime he didn't commite and shame because she enjoys rough sex. Rafe kidnaps, chains her in his cellar and has rough, mean sex with her. He tortures the truth out of her, using things she fears. Both had a kink for rough sex but it was done wrong. She was scared and degrated all the time, had not control over her body or her orgasms. Alex knew no other way to be, she never had sex with anyone other then her step brother and then Rafe so she didn't have a chance to see what she liked. Characters were cruel and abusive. This is not my type of story.
Detesting this book has nothing to do with it being dark, but rather absurd from start to inconclusive finish.
Don't look for character development. There is no understanding why any of the characters behave the way they do. At the start of the book we know the heroine has spent most if her life being raped by her step-brother and that she orgasms from the rapes. The hero has been sent to jail for eight years after being falsely accused of raping the heroine. So what does he do? He kidnaps and rapes her.
Nothing about the plot is believable and the story ends with the most RIDICULOUS cliffhanger ever.
We accept the qualities of fiction so that we can forget reality all the while clinging to some distorted version of life. There is no problem with the requirements that have to be met in order to read fiction. This is a testament to the fact fiction doesn’t have to be realistic. It has to be believable.
